Friends and Colleagues,

Welcome to issue #4, 2014 of JMS. As you’ve already noticed, we dramatically changed our website and, of course, JMS. In this new, more interactive and vivid design we considered your suggestions and recommendations. Here is what you’ll find in the new issue of JMS.
We need your help to determine the winner of our Case of the Month contest for 2014. Please vote for the case which provided you with the most important clinical information.
In the Science of Sports Massage section of JMS, our sports massage expert O. Bouimer, LMT, wrote an interesting article which examined the scientific roots of sports massage by telling the professional life story of one of the most celebrated scientists who worked in the sports massage field, Prof. I.M. Sarkisov-Sirasini, MD. The article has practical value because one of the techniques developed by Prof. Sarkisov-Sirasini is discussed in detail.
In the Science of Medical Massage section of JMS we continued to discuss issues of pain and its control by Medical Massage therapy. The second part of the article is dedicated to the scientific explanation of Neuromatrix Theory. Unfortunately, this recent breakthrough in pain science is frequently misrepresented by educators in the field of somatic rehabilitation.
The contribution to the Case of the Month section of JMS came from Jackie Ballard, LMT, from Phoenix, Arizona. Her submission illustrated another great aspect of Medical Massage – its clinical value in an integrative approach to somatic rehabilitation. It also illustrates the fact that Medical Massage opens a wide variety of employment opportunities for massage practitioners.
As usual, you will find a lot of useful information and professional guidance in our Good Apples/Bad Apples section of JMS.
