Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Welcome to the second issue of JMS, 2022. We appreciate the support of our readers from all around the world. We hope you enjoy this issue’s featured content:
Our Person of the Month is Brenda Howell, LMT from Fayetteville, NC. Brenda is an exceptional therapist close to graduating from SOMI’s Medical Massage Certification program. Witnessing firsthand the clinical effectiveness of Medical Massage, Brenda not only opened a successful Medical Massage clinic but is contributing to the medical massage field by exposing new therapists to the science of massage therapy. Brenda’s newly opened massage school, the Institute for Massage and Bodywork Therapy, is doing everything right – no personal opinions and unfounded claims with a curriculum based strictly on scientific data. We think that readers will enjoy Brenda’s dedication to the profession.
There are two articles, Check your Clinical Reasoning #5 and #6. The goal of these articles is to help therapists correctly evaluate clinical cases.
In the Personal Opinion section of JMS, we published an opinion piece by our Sports Massage expert, therapist, and educator Oleg Bouimer, LMT, CMMP. In his article, Using Chi For Sports Massage, Oleg discusses how to mobilize our inner energy–or Chi–to efficiently work with clients and to continue to be productive for years to come.
In the Science of Medical Massage section, we continue to highlight Periosteal Massage through Part II: Formation of Periosteal Dysfunction, by Dr. Ross Turchaninov, which discusses the formation of periosteal reflex zones.
In our Case of the Month section, SOMI’s current student Ben Keyes, LMT, from Winter Park, FL, shares his clinical case, Medical Massage Vs. Acute Tennis Elbow. This article is an excellent example of clinical thinking and the clinical application of Periosteal Massage.
Dr. Ross Turchaninov, Editor in Chief
